do you have black blazers in your money closet?

It’s spring for real now! Central Park is awash in cherry blossoms and I put my winter coat into hibernation until next winter.

At the change of seasons (for my California friends, that is when it gets less or more cold. use your imagination, lol.) do you assess what is in your closet and do what Marie Kondo advises?** You know, say thank you to the polka dot blouses and not-quite-the-right-shade-of-blue pants you haven’t worn in ten months and give them away?

I remember when I ditched three of the many black blazers left over from my nonprofit fundraising days that I was still holding onto. Soon after, I bought one of my favorite pieces of clothing, a teal blue vegan leather zip-up cropped jacket you have probably seen me wear if you have watched even one of my videos!

What if you could “Marie Kondo” the pieces of your money story that don’t serve you anymore?

What if you could pull the thoughts that are keeping you from making bank right off their hangers and hand them over to the Salvation Army in a bag of scarcity mindset, fear of charging what you are worth, and not being enough? Then you could make room for new jackets, jumpsuits and jeweled jean jackets that make you feel amazing when you wear them.

When you change your money story you change your life.

One of the fastest way to change your money story is to spend time around women who have a different story from you.

I grew up the child of a single mother in New York City in the 80s. My father had died suddenly of a heart attack just two years before this picture was taken of my brother and me. My mother moved us from Westmere, Albany to the heart of Manhattan on faith. She was alone and jobless in a recession, so it was a bold move to make instead of returning to Columbus, Ohio to live with her parents as everyone urged her to do. She wanted us to go to great schools, be exposed to art and culture, and have opportunities she never had. She had to change her money story to do that.

From faculty wife with a successful professor husband eleven years her senior who took care of everything to do with their finances, she had to become the chief breadwinner and creative problem solver (throw a paint party for your friends to get your kids’ rooms painted! get a job as a teacher at a local college! learn how to hand an envelope of cash to the super of the building you want to move into so you can get the affordable apartment! ask for favors from family members to get your kids into private schools on scholarship!).

My mother being able to change her money story changed the story for our family forever, and for me in particular. It paved the way for me to get a top tier education, have a great work ethic and go to my first choice college on scholarship. It inspired me to do the work I love, helping women entrepreneurs to break through mindset and money issues, and get the skills they need to scale up.

Are you ready to change your money story?

What is on the other side of you throwing away a few things in your closet? Would it make room for more ease in your work? More sales? More joy from being able to serve thousands more clients and customers? More abundance for you and your kids and one day their kids’ kids?
